Tamil Nadu politics has once again become the center of national discussion as the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government faces mounting criticism from opposition parties, activists, and sections of the public over governance, law and order, and ideological battles. The political atmosphere in the state has intensified in recent weeks with debates around federal rights, language policies, economic development, and central-state relations dominating headlines.

The DMK government led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin continues to position itself as a defender of Tamil identity and state autonomy. However, opposition leaders, especially from the BJP and AIADMK, have accused the ruling party of focusing more on political narratives rather than administrative efficiency.

One of the biggest flashpoints has been the ongoing debate over education and language policies. DMK leaders have strongly opposed what they describe as the “imposition” of Hindi through central education reforms. The state government reiterated its commitment to the two-language formula, arguing that Tamil Nadu’s cultural identity must remain protected.

Meanwhile, the BJP has attempted to expand its footprint in Tamil Nadu by targeting urban voters, youth, and first-time voters. Political analysts believe the next few years could become crucial for the saffron party in South India, especially after its aggressive campaigns in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK government has also been under scrutiny regarding infrastructure projects, industrial growth, and unemployment concerns. Opposition parties claim that despite large investment announcements, employment generation has not matched expectations. The ruling party, however, argues that Tamil Nadu remains among India’s top-performing industrial states with strong automobile, textile, electronics, and IT sectors.

Another major topic in Tamil Nadu politics is the relationship between the state government and the Governor. Several bills passed by the Assembly reportedly faced delays in approval, triggering constitutional debates and criticism from DMK leaders. The party accused the Governor’s office of interfering in democratic processes.

Political observers say the DMK still retains a strong support base because of welfare schemes, social justice policies, and regional identity politics. However, the opposition believes anti-incumbency sentiments could gradually rise if governance concerns continue.

Mr. Veerapandian also said the Supreme Court, in the S.R. Bommai vs Union of India case and in many other cases, had said enough time should be given to the leader of the single-largest party to prove the majority. The Governor should respect the Constitution and act accordingly.

“The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, led by Mr. Vijay, has won 108 seats. Not inviting him to form the government would amount to disrespecting the mandate of the people of Tamil Nadu. Even now, 233 elected members are unable to take oath. This is a disgrace to the State and a blow to democracy,” he said, adding the verdict of the people must be respected.

Tamil Nadu politics is intensely active in early May 2026 as the ruling DMK faces significant pressure ahead of the 2026 assembly elections, with new, intense competition from actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which is drawing massive crowds (over 400,000 at a recent rally) and attracting youth voters. A major 20-year alliance appears to be shifting, as Congress is considering backing the TVK, causing a major rift with the DMK

Shifting Political Landscape: The traditional AIADMK-DMK binary is facing a challenge from TVK, which has seen rapid growth and has become a serious contender among younger voters.

Sources, cited by ANI, also indicated that some senior leaders have advised TVK to explore legal options, including approaching the Supreme Court or the high court over the government formation process. Others are said to have suggested the possibility of fresh elections if the deadlock continues.TVK, despite emerging as a major force in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, remains short of the majority mark by 5 MLAs. Vijay has already secured the backing of five MLAs from Congress, but still requires support from five more legislators to cross the halfway mark in the Tamil Nadu assembly.

Tamil Nadu Govt Formation Live Updates: Legal experts divided over Governor’s delay in inviting TVK to form government. Constitutional law experts are divided over the delay in inviting the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government in Tamil Nadu after the hung Assembly verdict, reports PTI. While some experts say Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar is entitled to verify whether the party has prima facie majority support, others argue that he has little option but to invite the Vijay-led TVK, which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly.
